Survey Report: Impact of COVID-19 in Taiwan - January 2022

The percentage of people who believe the COVID situation in the coming year is getting worse has slightly gone up to 37%, while the percentage of those believing it's getting better has stayed the same. The outbreak of Omicron variant at the end of November might be the reason of the sentiment changes.

Key findings

    • 41% of internet users are cutting their budget in the coming month.

    • Medicine/health supplements has become the category with the most budget growth, which has gone up by 40%. There's also a 40% of increase for packaged foods and household goods and around 30% for dining/entertainment.

    • For Taiwanese internet users aged 18-60, as many as 94% have got their first dose against COVID, while 87% have received the 2nd dose.

Recommendations

It appears that the stay at home lifestyle has gradually become the new normal and the consumption patterns shaped by its influence are becoming ordinary for businesses. Therefore, businesses should lay out strategies for consumers to alter their budget allocation and encourage spending on non-necessities.
