Survey Report: Impact of COVID-19 in Taiwan - December 2021

The percentage of people who believe the COVID situation in the coming year is getting worse has gone up to 34%, while those think the opposite has dropped to 29%. We assume such changes can be attributed to the outbreak of Omicron variant at the end of November; therefore Taiwanese are being rather cautious and conservative about the future.

Key findings

    • 35% of internet users are cutting down their budget in the next month.

    • Dining out/entertainment has become the category with the most budget growth, which has gone up by 40%. On the other hand, the budget for medicine/health supplements, packaged foods and household goods has also increased by more than 30%.

Recommendations

It appears that the stay-at-home lifestyle has gradually become the new normal and the consumption patterns shaped by its influence are becoming ordinary for businesses. Since the quintuple stimulus voucher program has rolled out, businesses should lay out strategies for consumers to alter their budget allocation and spur spending on non-necessities.
